Extravagance within Budget

Spending within an astonishing budget of $120,000 on their act, the Japanese Association, Singapore (JAS) garnered 450 participants to perform during the 45th Chingay Parade that was held on Feb 10 and 11, 2017 at the F1 Pit Building.

The JAS had much in stored for the 45th Chingay Parade, with their float being one of the highlights. In addition, they invited special guest performers from Kaga City to kick start the performance with a bang.

The JAS still managed to keep within their budget despite having witnessed a rise in the number of participants this year as compared to the previous years. They also succeeded in showcasing a memorable performance for this year’s parade.

Mr Tan Lii Chong, a JAS participant said: “For the JAS, everything is very colourful this year,” when asked about what was different in this year’s performance.

Having 80% of their performers being volunteers made up of both Singaporeans and Japanese participants ensured that they could bring out an even more fantastic four-minute performance whilst keeping within their budget. As such, this incorporated cultural differences between the performers.

In an interview with the administrative officer of the JAS, Miss Sheryl Kiang said: “It feels great to be able to have both Japanese and local staffs as well as participants join such a significant event in Singapore.”

Even after 15 years of investment into Chingay, the JAS stays enthusiastic in involving themselves in the event. The association believes that it is an effective way to raise awareness about cultural integration between our locals and the Japanese community in Singapore.

“It’s a great cultural experience for all parties involved,” said Miss Kiang.

This year’s theme for the JAS’ performance was “Soran Bushi – Riding the Waves of Life.” The dance moves portrayed the waves of the ocean and was incorporated with the folk song originated from Hokkaido which had powerful beats and rhythms. All of which corresponded to this year’s theme for the Chingay Parade: “Soundwaves Chingay, We Care Singapore.”

When asked about her expectations for the JAS in future Chingay Parades, Miss Kiang mentioned, “We would like to be able to expose our locals to the Japanese culture and also have our Japanese participants be exposed to our local culture.” With this, we can expect their participation in Chingay in years to come.
